Michelle Korevaar founding director shares her thoughts “The nonprofit world is relentless—an endless cycle of fighting uphill battles, pushing for change, and often feeling like the problem is just too big to solve. There are days when the weight of it all is exhausting, when the magnitude of plastic pollution, environmental degradation, and systemic inaction feels overwhelming. But then, there are moments like today—when you spend time with leaders who care, who refuse to give up, and who remind you why this work matters. Being on the ground with Kiara Worth, Tasneema Diest, and our incredible youth advocates was one of those moments. It was empowering to share this space with like-minded changemakers who not only see the urgency of the crisis but are actively working—every single day—to create solutions. These are the people who inspire me to keep going, to keep pushing, to keep believing that every action, no matter how small, is worth it. Because change doesn’t come from standing on the sidelines. It comes from stepping up, standing together, and refusing to back down—no matter how big the challenge.
Kiara Worth is a renowned environmental advocate, photographer, and communicator who has dedicated her career to documenting and promoting climate action on a global scale. As an official photographer and storyteller for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), she has played a vital role in capturing the human and environmental impacts of climate change, as well as the critical negotiations shaping international climate policy. Spending a day on the road with Kiara Worth was an experience of exponential value for Michelle Korevaar and the entire ChangeMakersHub team, deepening our collective understanding of the plastic pollution crisis and the urgent need for climate literacy. From engaging with the leadership at Stellenbosch Business School, where the conversation centered on systemic solutions, to meeting locals learning to construct with EcoBricks, Kiara’s ability to connect with people across all levels of society was truly remarkable. At the heart of our EcoChangemakers family are the tireless hands and unwavering spirits of Frank and Mr. Diest, who dedicate themselves to the work that truly counts—transforming waste into purpose. Day after day, they repurpose discarded plastic into EcoBricks, turning them into functional, lasting structures like public service benches—not just places to rest, but legacy pieces that stand as bold statements of sustainability and resilience. More than just builders, they are teachers, passing on invaluable hands-on skills to local changemakers like Simba, Godfrey, Stanley and 9 other artisans who are learning to see waste not as pollution, but as potential. Their work is both art and activism, a powerful reminder that solutions to our world’s biggest problems don’t just come from policies and boardrooms but from people on the ground, getting their hands dirty, and proving that real change is built—brick by brick.
Michelle describes; “Our last stop for the day was Tasneema, Kiara, Alex and Rebecca and myself visiting the local beach, where we didn’t have to walk more than a few feet to find and sift through harmful microplastics—tiny yet destructive fragments that persist for hundreds of years, endangering marine life. Kiara’s presence not only enriched these conversations but also reinforced the power of collaboration.”
As Kiara and Michelle exchanged ideas, perspectives, and strategies throughout the day, with the very real and profound introspections from the passionate Youth Ecochangemakers, it became clear that the intersection of storytelling, advocacy, and hands-on action is key to driving real change.
