WHO

The League of Friends of the Blind (LOFOB) was established in 1933. It is a registered welfare and fundraising organisation, and registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) and Public-Benefit Organisation (PBO). LOFOB is community based and operates from the LOFOB centre in Klip Road Grassy Park. LOFOB provides a wide range of independence development services to blind and visually impaired adults and children. The three main service areas are Independence Development Services, Early Childhood Development and Wellness- Sport and Recreation.

WHY

Our mission is to enable all visually impaired children, adults, their families and care-givers to reach their optimal potential through providing early childhood development, independence development, wellness programmes and to care for and protect the rights of those who, due to circumstances beyond their control, are unable to do so themselves.

Our vision is to provide an all encompassing independence development and prevention of blindness service that ensures the successful integration of all visually impaired persons into society.

WHAT

Traditional approaches to wellness and the education and training of blind and visually impaired sportsmen and women have been inadequate over the years. LOFOB has introduced a comprehensive programme that emphasises continuous health and wellness education, illness prevention and participation in mainstream sport, recreation and leisure time activities.

The programme includes participation in team sports and practices (cricket, goal ball, futsal/ 5 A-side football, tandem cycling), individual sports (swimming, hiking), social games (draughts / checkers, judo and dominoes), arts and culture events, leisure and recreational activities and a motivational speaker campaign.
