On this World Art Day, we celebrate the profound impact that art has on our lives and communities. Art is not only a form of expression but also a powerful medium for social change, creativity, and innovation. This year, we’re excited to highlight the incredible intersection of art and sustainability through the efforts of our EcoChangeMakers programme.
At ChangeMakersHub, we believe that art can play a crucial role in addressing environmental challenges, particularly the issue of waste. Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in landfills and oceans, posing a significant threat to our ecosystems. However, through the transformative power of art, we are turning this challenge into an opportunity by repurposing non-recyclable plastic that would otherwise be lost to landfill.
Our flagship initiative, EcoChangeMakers is a Blueprint Programme easily paid forward, a learning journey that empowers everyone to become advocates and contribute to the much needed climate action.
This programme elevates understanding & changed behaviour through a journey of experiential milestones that bridge the gap within the circular economy of a developing world. Both environmental sustainability as well as social equity are crucial and innovative solutions on the ground are needed to create access to the new emerging green economy.
Our Statement ART initiative empowers youth and unemployed citizens with skills like clay modelling, mosaic making, and other artistic techniques. By teaching these invaluable skills, we are nurturing a new generation of artists who not only harness their creativity but also learn the importance of sustainability. These youth and locals are transforming waste into beautiful works of art, turning what was once considered trash into treasure.
In addition to fostering artistic talents, our programme is also committed to supporting local artisans. By creating job opportunities for unemployed locals, we bring together community members to collaborate on various projects. Across Clanwilliam, Atlantis, Stellenbosch Business School, and the Table View area, you’ll find our benches adorned with innovative art pieces made from repurposed plastics. These public installations not only beautify the environment but serve as a reminder of the importance of sustainable practices.
Our latest projects feature a stunning array of artistic installations, including trees, whales, rhinos, and birds, all crafted from non-recyclable plastic. We’re particularly excited about our two trees launched in 2024: the baobab tree, made entirely from repurposed non-recyclable plastic, tiles, and bottle caps, showcases the beauty of waste transformed into art. Additionally, our “Reflections on Sustainability” tree is designed with a mirror at its core, symbolizing the importance of reflecting on our sustainable practices while also incorporating non-recyclable plastic. These tree’s serve as powerful reminders of our responsibility to care for the environment and the impact of our choices.
