Flooding occurred along Carmen Street in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain yesterday, 8 April 2024 following the heavy rains of the night before. The City’s Road Infrastructure Management team responded to the flooding event immediately and found that there was a blockage in the stormwater infrastructure that they needed to clear for the water to be able to drain. Upon inspection it was found that the blockage was unfortunately caused by illegal dumping as the staff found building rubble; tyres; gardening tools; plastic as well as car parts that had been dumped in the system. The team was able to remove the items and can confirm that the roadway was clear by the afternoon.

‘The City urges residents to please refrain from dumping their waste in the drainage systems as this will most definitely increase the chances of flooding events in their areas. Dumping into stormwater and sewer systems causes untold misery and damages in our communities. Residents must report those involved in these anti-social practices and always report blocked infrastructure to the City,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
