WHO

Dr Dee Blackie is a child protection researcher and community worker in Johannesburg South Africa.  Following a 15-year career in business consulting and change management, she started working with communities concerned with child protection, child abandonment and adoption in 2010.  She facilitated the creation of a National Adoption Coalition for South Africa in 2011, and since then her primary focus has been on creating awareness and engaging with communities around child protection challenges.

Her master’s research explored the lived experience of child abandonment and adoption in South Africa, and her PhD research has taken her into the field of disability, with a specific focus on atypical children and critical autism studies.

Dee launched Courage in 2015, a community engagement programme aimed at assisting child protection officers and communities to address the challenges they are experiencing every day. Over the past five years she has used this programme and toolkit to empower meaningful change in the care and protection of our children in communities around the world.

WHAT

The aim of Courage is to engage with children, parents, community members, child protection officers and organisations to develop positive and proactive strategies for change that are effective and sustainable. Our programmes are focussed in four key areas 1) Child Gender & Sexuality; 2) Child Protection; 3) Child Parenting; and 4) Child Empowerment.

WHY

Courage is a powerful child protection and empowerment programme that combines toolkits and processes to help individuals, families, communities, and organisations recognise the rights and needs of all children, identify where they are being abused or overlooked, and develop the strategies they will need to solve their child protection challenges.

WISHLIST

We would like to empower as many ‘Courage Community Coaches’ with our toolkits and training so that they can engage with their communities to affect real and meaningful change in the protection and empowerment of children.  You can do this as an individual or organization through:

  • Online training and free downloading of our toolkit
  • Organisational or community train-the-trainer workshops
  • Purchasing a printed version of our toolkit/posters for training or display
  • Investing in research and development of new toolkit items and content
