WHO

Leading Women of Africa is registered as a Not-For-Profit Company (NPC) in South Africa. Headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, LWA operates outside South Africa through collaboration with other women or regional Organisations that share the same goals.

WHY

Leading Women of Africa (LWA) was founded as a Pan African Forum that continuously promotes efforts to position women’s economic empowerment at the focal point the 21st Century’s goals on sustainable development. Founded in May of 2008 by Mrs Madelein Mkunu, launched with the endorsement of the South African Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) and in collaboration with the South African Women Entrepreneurs Network (SAWEN).

WHAT

LWA works in line with the goals adopted at the 1995 Beijing conference, which include mainstreaming gender perspectives in structuring, implementing and monitoring of all related policies and programmes, including economic development programmes. The organisation also promotes the attainment of the United Nations (UN) Millennium goals of 2000 – in particular MDG 3, which seeks to use gender equity to combat poverty and stimulate sustainable development.

LWA is determined to put African Women at the heart of sustainable economic development in Africa.To advance the leadership and economic development of African women entrepreneurs, women-owned businesses and SMME’s on the African continent.

LWA’S Primary Goals:

  • To mainstream and catalyst women’s economic development agenda in Africa across all sectors including public, private and civil society in line with the 1995 Beijing Conference and the 2000 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
  • To deliver inclusive platforms to ensure equitable access to business development support, financial resources, investment, and technical infrastructure for women entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses and SMME’s on the African continent.
  • To create a sustainable leadership framework to drive the advancement of aspirations and ambitions of African women entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses and SMME’s on the African continent.

LWA continues to be at the forefront of gender advocacy and engaging with partners who are responsible for the development of policies relating to women issues as well providing policy recommendations to policy makers at National, Regional and international level.
