Listing Description

M Pets is a registered Non-Profit Company and Non-Profit Organisation that provides veterinary care for all animals. We also prioritise rehabilitation of violence through work with animals.

NPC Reg. no. 2013/211444/08

NPO Reg. no. 227-813

WHO

M Pets is headed by the Founder, Sandra Jacobs-Andipatin, a retired Social worker. Operations are managed by Veronica Adams and a small team of dedicated Manenberg community members who are passionate about animal welfare in Manenberg.

WHAT

Our services also extend beyond animal health care.  As an extension of our social reform work, M Pets run education and rehabilitation outreach programmes, with anti-violence components.  Gentle interaction with animals and understanding animal behaviour is a crucial antidote to the high levels of violence experienced in Manenberg. Importantly, M Pets’ work is underpinned by fundamental human and animal rights of restorative justice to pets and owners.

Our organisation receives no funding from government agencies. The staff work relentlessly to self-sustain operations by selling affordable pet food, over the counter animal medication, secondhand clothing, bric-a-brac, fresh fish and other consumables. We are also involved with recycling, providing gardening services and transporting goods for organisations without transport.

Our partners include Animal Welfare Society Phillip, The SPCA,  Animal Anti-Cruelty League and Animal Rescue Organization. An in-patient, mobile service and anti-cruelty inspectorate are provided.

Belmont Road Veterinary Clinic, Rondebosch and the SPCA provide the 24-hour emergency service.

WHY

M Pets was founded to address the lack of animal welfare and veterinary services in Manenberg. Working as an intern Social Worker during the 1970s, Sandra witnessed how socioeconomic disparities impacted the lives of pet owners and their animals. Unable to attain basic social needs, pet owners could not afford veterinary and animal welfare services. This resulted in a surge in animal abandonment, abuse, and neglect. In 2013 M Pets was established to combat these societal challenges.

Manenberg Pets Project provides primary and secondary health care services to all domestic animals. One of our main objectives is the vigorous sterilisation drive for domestic animals. Pet owners contribute to the subsidised veterinary costs on a lay-bye system. Every Saturday, there is a basic clinic for mite & mange dipping, shampooing, over the counter medication, animal food, leads, harnesses and collars.

M Pets work to progressively uplift, inspire and educate communities. Their work seeks not only to resolve matters which can be seen with the naked eye, but also matters of the heart and mind, by restoring a sense of pride and achievement in the people they touch.

I was fortunate enough to to be personally involved in supporting a member of the M Pets team, who had limited ability to read and write, obtain his driving licence. I bore witness to the immense care taken by the organisation to facilitate this process, ensuring that they transported him safely to my home for lessons, constant check-ins on his progress, and they offered great encouragement along the way. They willingly and lovingly walked a journey with this young man, hand in hand.

M Pets places the wellbeing and development of their staff and volunteers at the cornerstone of their operation. They encourage community co-operation, communication, commitment, accountability and service as part of their value system.

An investment in M Pets is not only a monetary gesture, but an investment in restoring the communities at large.

Manenberg Pets Project (MPP) is an organization which focus its services on promoting animal care but also serve to as a vehicle for community development. This initiative provides sterling services to bring various groups, often in conflict, in the community together and advance care to the pet owners by making them aware of the need to care for themselves. Similar initiatives such as the bird project in correctional facilities have resulted in inmates realizing that they can only care for their animals by caring for themselves. The MPP in my opinion is able to realize this outcome as shown by the statistics of consultations and feedback of service users. This outcome is due to the committed staff and volunteers of the projects.

I have a profound respect for the commitment and dedication of each member and all volunteers associated with MPets amidst the sporadic turmoil and gang violence in their area of operation. May you continue as long as you can in your quest provide much needed essential veterinary care to the animals in need thereof, while also striving to assist in caring for some of the needs in the communities you serve.
    RESPECT!

I have been volunteering with MPP for several years. They are a dedicated group of people working for the love of animals in a gang-torn, violent area.
