I recently completed my Honours degree in Politics, Economics and Philosophy (PPE) at the University of Cape Town, where I graduated with distinction. The driving force behind my decision to major in these three disciplines was to equip myself with the appropriate skills and knowledge to – I hope – become a vehicle for positive change. My primary motivation in both my life and work is to place myself in a position that allows me to contribute to sustainable economic development and growth in the developing world, most particularly in my home country South Africa. Like Change Makers Hub, my roots are firmly in South Africa, its people, and its future.
As a recent graduate, I realize that I still have so much that I still need to learn and a long way to go before I can become the Change Maker that I aspire to be. An important step in that journey has been my experience working at Change Makers Hub, where I have been given the opportunity to put my passion into action. Through working on the Eco Change Makers project, I have developed a strong awareness of the urgent environmental issues facing our country, most particularly with respect to its plastic waste crisis. When it comes to preserving and protecting our environment from the devastating impact of plastic waste, I have realized that many of us – myself included – have unintentionally grown complacent about a problem that requires our combined and immediate attention. As someone who loves my country and the unparalleled natural beauty that is has to offer, I am now more dedicated than ever to becoming a bigger part of the solution.
Other than fueling my passion for protecting and sustaining our oceans and environment through plastic waste reduction, my experience working with Change Makers Hub has reinforced and built upon my understanding of the importance of inclusivity, compassion, and community – some core values that I believe to be the real drivers of change. It is a privilege to have my voice included in this dynamic and much-needed platform, and I look forward to seeing the ripple effect continue to grow.
