“The need for individuals to take the lead and act responsibly is more important than ever in order to make a positive impact”
This Earth Day ChangeMakersHub take another step towards their mission to contribute to accelerating progress on the Sustainable development goals. Our mission through experiential learning makes climate action inclusive and easy to participate in. We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Stellenbosch Business School in the EcoChangeMaker Plastic CAPture Challenge. This initiative aims to tackle plastic pollution through innovative solutions and engagement.
Leadership has always been part of Stellenbosch Business School’s DNA. The institution was the first African business school to gain the major international accreditations, namely AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA. Just over 1% of the world’s business schools have the Triple Crown of accreditations. This Earth Day they take the lead by embracing the EcoChangeMakers Plastic CAPture Challenge with us! As an educational Institute of Excellence embracing the potential of youth and opening young minds to their future world; they have paid the opportunity forward to a local school, so that they too can take part in the challenge.
Why plastic caps matter
For every 1 kg of HDPE diverted from landfills or incineration and recycled properly, you save approximately: ~2 kg CO₂ equivalents.
You may be surprised to learn that plastic bottle caps rank among the top five most detrimental forms of plastic waste harming our oceans. While these tiny caps may seem insignificant, their presence in marine environments poses serious risks to wildlife and habitats. The EcoChangeMakers Plastic CAPture Challenge, aims to tackle this issue directly by motivating individuals and organizations to collect these little culprits and keep them out of our waters.
The Heart Collection Structure
At the heart of our campaign is the innovative heart-shaped collection structure—an engaging way to inspire action! Each Heart is a sturdy metal container specifically designed for collecting plastic bottle tops and an opportunity for Business to empower community to act.
- Leadership by Example
People are more likely to take action when they see others—especially those they respect—doing the same. By stepping up, you show that action is not only necessary but possible, turning ideals into real, visible behavior.
- Creates a Ripple Effect
Every time you engage in climate action, you plant a seed. Whether it’s a beach clean-up, sharing a post, or joining a campaign, your actions can spark curiosity, shift perceptions, and encourage others to get involved—especially among young people who are looking for role models.
- Builds a Culture of Accountability
When leaders take responsibility for climate issues, it sets a tone that says: “We’re all in this together.” It encourages communities, businesses, and governments to step up too, reinforcing that climate action isn’t optional—it’s urgent and shared.
- Gives Credibility to the Cause
Responsible leaders who walk the talk lend authenticity and urgency to climate efforts. Your voice becomes more persuasive when it’s backed by action, making it easier to galvanize support from others—be it the public, funders, or policymakers.
- Turns Climate Anxiety Into Empowerment
So many people feel overwhelmed by the scale of the climate crisis. Seeing someone actively involved helps shift that mindset from helplessness to hope and empowerment. It says, “Change is happening. You can be part of it too.”
- Inspires Innovation and Collaboration
By getting involved, leaders often open doors for new ideas and collaborations. Your presence in the space invites others to co-create, contribute, and think differently—especially around circular economy, sustainability, and inclusive solutions.
Why YOU matter the most. We need you to Get Involved!
The EcoChangeMakers Plastic CAPture Challenge invites all staff, facilities, and visitors of Stellenbosch Business School to join forces in collecting plastic bottle caps to fill the Heart located on campus.
This initiative not only promotes immediate actions to reduce plastic waste but also serves as a valuable platform for enhancing climate literacy within our community.
Participating in climate action and responding to calls to participate is critically important—especially when your involvement serves as an example of responsible leadership. Here’s why this kind of leadership can be so powerful in inspiring others:
Every CAP Counts!
Let’s remember that each small action contributes to a larger cause, and together, united in purpose, we can create a cleaner, greener future for our planet. Join us in this important endeavour. Together, let’s make a significant impact in our fight against plastic pollution.
