Beyond any doubt, the facts speak for themselves and the power lies in the hands of those willing to do small things that make a difference, within a collective. That’s when the power is taken back into our own hands.

Here are some of the realities; South Africa over 80 000 tonnes of plastic leaks into our oceans per year. Globally 11 million tons of plastic waste escapes into the ocean and makes up 80% of all marine pollution. 80% of this enters the ocean via rivers and coastlines, while the other 20% comes from marine sources such as fishing nets, ropes, and fleets.

Winter season is the time that the least amount of beach cleanups happen because it has less participants. This is not just because it’s cold, windy and rainy; July month kicks off a lot of much needed humanitarian activities to help those in need, which means, most charities and their change makers are stretched beyond their capacity. This is where active citizenship comes in.

Our ChangeMakersHub continues to distribute food and aid to our partner Non profit organisations across the Western Cape, but this Mandela Day 2024 we are making a conscious stand to take another important step; to ensure our planet is being taken care of too. We do this under the banner of EcoChangeMakers; a programme successfully piloted over the last few years. What a journey it has been.

By 2050, it is projected that plastic will likely outweigh all fish in the sea. This statistic sounds ridiculous and far-fetched, but they are in fact very realistic. Our research and successful results of the EcoChangeMakers activations has proven that plastic is literally devastating our ecosystems and we cannot look the other way. When you know better you must do better.

On the 5th June, World Environment Day, EcoChangeMakers launched a call to action to key stakeholders across sectors, asking for their leadership to make inclusive climate action a key priority. The triple planetary crisis is not a theory anymore, it is very real. It is also very overwhelming, but the EcoChangeMakers programme empowers everyone to take real and relevant climate action in their everyday lives.

We also know that by implementing the EcoChangeMakers Programme into vulnerable communities we can help achieve positive contribution to all the sustainable development goals and ensuring that no man, no woman, no child and no living thing bis left behind!

Please join our mission to catch plastic at source and repurpose out of the equation forever.

This Mandela Day we need all the people who care about this issue too, to please join us and #walkthetalk along Sunset Beach, meeting at Isabella drive beach entrance at 2pm

And remember, even if you can’t join us, we can show you how to be an EcoChangeMaker, very easily, every day. Follow us on social media FB @CHangemakershub.org to learn how or sign up here to find out more
